Subject: Emergency Department Overcrowding
I am writing to address the safety and quality issues that affect the ED nursing staff. Most of the healthcare professionals working at the hospital’s emergency department have been experiencing high numbers of patients visiting the department with diverse urgent needs. One of the factors contributing to this new trend includes the upgrading of the hospital to a referral health facility. This has led to an increase in the number of patients admissions in the emergency unit. Also, many ED staff members have reported that the use of the paper system in the emergency unit has reduced efficiency in the ED operations hence promoting the crowding
effect. These safety and quality issues have contributed to prolonged patient stay in the ED, insufficient inpatient capacity, and delayed laboratory and imaging tests (Melton III et al., 2016).
Additionally, the ED nurses are forced to work for long hours to serve the large population of patients with different urgent needs, thus making them to burnout. Besides, I would like to propose a solution to the above issue. Therefore, the hospital can overcome ED overcrowding by implementing Health Information Exchange (HIE) technology at the emergency unit. This technology is designed to improve the manner in which patient information is access and transferred from one healthcare provider to another (Everson, Kocher & Adler-Milstein, 2016). Thus, the implementation of HIE will allow the ED providers to access the clinical data for the referred patients easily, from the providers working in other hospitals. Enhanced patient information will help reduce the cases of duplicate tests, medical errors, patient readmission, and also improve the diagnosis process (Martin et al., 2018). Also, the substitution of the paper system with electronic health records will help to address the issue of prolonged patient stays and nursing burnout (Melton III et al., 2016). This technology will allow the available nursing staff will be able to serve many patients within a short period.

Yours Sincerely
